Move to Paris. Great points and it’s so true our kids rule our lives. Most Europeans operate this way and they are much happier than we are. Or at least more balanced with their social interactions. I think that is far healthier.

I agree that over parenting and overstimulating children in general is one of the great failures of modern parenting, but I would hardly say that the french are doing better. I’ve lived here for six years like the author, and I’m less than impressed. Yes, the children tend not to bother their parents – because nearly all of the parents that I know follow a cry-it-out strategy from infancy onwards. But the statistics about learning disorders are staggering. My sister in law, a French elementary school teacher, goes on and on about how much harder it is every year to get the kids to sit and focus and how many new medicated kids she gets every year, so I’m not sure no tantrums equals calm, composed kids.

Right on M…there is a difference between ignoring their needs to serve our own, than in lovingly allowing them to figure things out on their own….in any country, the fundamental issue lies with parents who want to check out after the trophy baby years are over and the real parenting must begin…it is easy to spend time with a smiley little one who adores you…it is through adversity that most people show where they stand….whether it be parenting or otherwise
