I think both articles were very interesting. I had a predictably American instinct upon reading last week’s article in praise of French parenting: “but how can kids be innovative and creative adults if they have to live strictly obedient, structured childhoods?” But it was followed closely by a resonance with the fact that dinnertime is too much of a struggle. I always think of raising a beautiful, powerful, woman – but my creative, persistent, opinionated 3 year old makes mealtime too disruptive an experience. There’s got to be a middle ground somehow – a way to have your kids listen to you AND listen to themselves.
It’s fascinating that French kids listen at home and not outside of the home; the author is right that it’s the exact opposite in the US. I’m very sure that’s there’s something important and telling about this difference, but I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is.
